We have serious predators in this city, brutally raping women, and young girls and boys, and killers, too, and these corrupt degenerates are going after Kevin Dahlgren?? Because he made them look bad?? It’s terrible, especially after all the crimes in office that Mikey Boy has committed!!

Yes, Richard Cheverton is a good man. However, a minor quibble over this statement:

“It’s a fact that justice is expensive, especially for those facing the resources of a District Attorney.”

You know who truly has a bottomless pit of resources? The defense bar. Yes, that famous indigent defense bar that is supposedly broke in the state of Oregon.

It’s broke, in part, because it’s untouchable. If you’re a prosecutor (or journalist), try finding out how much the defense is spending on “expert witnesses, etc.” You will run into that inviolate “attorney-client privilege” that defense attorneys enjoy. Prosecutors are required to tell the truth; defense attorneys are not.

When I was a cops and courts reporter in Southern California, I loved covering a good trial. It’s like the best theater only better because it’s real.

Public defenders and prosecutors could both make more money as corporate lawyers. What sets the best defense attorneys and prosecutors apart is their courage and passion. You have to be willing to stand in front of a jury of strangers (some of whom may harbor biases and stupidity) and put your cause in their hands.

Plea bargaining is so much easier. It’s also a necessity given the demands of a trial.

Dahlgren’s case appears to be politically motivated. It deserves a real trial.
