Great article, Pamela! Yes, here we have two of the three Gorgon Sisters. Let us hope the third one doesn't show up any time soon, looking for her/yheir one shared eyeball. I wonder who's got it, since there's no evidence that the two sisters we're stuck with here can see anything approaching reality.

Unlike just about every other journalist in town, Pam points out that these creatures are in office on 25-percent of the vote...to which I might add: "...based on a rank choice system that was tailored to put more 'minorities' into office." Two members of the charter commission, which somehow came up with this system, are now on the city council.

The city charter is fatally flawed. The 12-member council is guaranteed to produce deadlocks. The original charter language forces the mayor to break ties (he's chickened out twice now); council regulations exempt the vote for council president from that requirement, and the city attorney issues fogs of non-opinions (roughly translated as, "Don't ask ME!") to justify it.

Whatta mess. No one around town is making any noises about repairing the work of Avalos & Company by putting a measure on the ballot. It would be simple: at a minimum add an "at large" councilor (elected citywide with 50% of the vote); or, even better, get rid of the 25-percenters and increase the number of districts, or keep the four with one member per. Elected by a majority of voters, which will shut down the DSA types and ballot-stuffing.

Any takers?

Avalos and Morillo are fundamentally weak individuals who would wither under the scrutiny of prior city council stalwarts named Schwab, Ivancie, Clark, McCready, Katz and even the pedophile Goldschmidt. Sadly, however, there are no strong opponents to call them out in the council of eunuchs. We are stuck with them and their clones coming in the near future.

Disgraceful. Portland has “gone to hell in a hand basket”. Wish we could send all the Democrat Socialists to one place where they could all live together under their ideals with their own money.

Great article Pamela!! My belief is that Angie wants to be “famous” more than anything else. That seems to be the lifelong ambition of Gen Z kids today, above all else. She needs to do something about her eyebrows. Groucho Marx went out of style 50 years ago. Though Girlie Girl probably doesn’t even know who he was… 🤣

You wonder if the cops would even show up now given the same circumstances?

I never met Gert, but I did do business with the Naito brothers. Where are the leaders like them today?

The third-place candidate in each district does not need 25% of the votes. That said, everything else in your column is spot on. Just think, all twelve councilors voted yes for the new City Manager (Mr. Lee), the man who left Greely under suspicious circumstances. Then, again, he checks many of the boxes required in Portland.

Richard Cheverton's avatar

Each winning candidate gets no more/no less than 25-percent of the vote. Check the numbers.

Sometimes it feels like our world is a sick, sad, twisted joke - where politicians like Avalos and Morillo - just like AOC and Ilan - are “elected” to office and every word out of their mouth is either ignorant, deceitful, an outright lie or antithetical to America’s founding principles. How on EARTH can this be real? They’re all empty vessels - no substance, wisdom or class. And to add insult to injury they’re raking in the dough. It’s nothing less than a complete disgrace.

Excellent article Pamela. And, yes, I bet today the Peahens would have sympathy for those low lifes who tried to grab Gert.

"Boyle became the face of Columbia Sportswear — not because she looked like a supermodel — but because customers liked the idea of a grey-haired, crotchety old broad looking out for them."

Anyone who has seen a photo of the young Gert would know that at one time she damn sure DID look like a supermodel. I am pretty happy to have a signed copy of her book.

The thing to know about the empty Gateway Fred Meyer is that the city already owns the large empty lot across the street, and cannot find a developer to build there. They have already run out of other people's money.

Dave Mc Lean's avatar

Starbucks had the good sense to bail out of Gateway a few years ago. I know the owner of the Subway there, he's hanging on by his fingernails. The MAX stop ruined that shopping center.

Alicia Imel's avatar

I don't know what you mean by the MAX stop ruining the shopping center. The Gateway Fred Meyer was built in the 1980's around the same time the Gresham Light Rail line was put in. (It replaced an older building from the 1950's.) How did something built in the 1980's cause the ruin of a store in 2025? When I worked at the Gateway Fred Meyer in the 1980's-1990's crime was a fraction of what it is today. Much of the mall we see today was built to take advantage of the commuters who used the transit mall. The difference today is the homeless encampments that are scattered between Mall 205 and Gateway. The refusal of the county and city to remove the encampments, plus the decline of Portland's downtown economy that caused the commuters to use the transit center are the cause of the decline of the shopping center.

More people in an area riding light rail can lead to higher opportunities for crime, especially petty theft and vandalism. This is especially true when we add in defunding police. Rural Oregonians who value safe communities need to be aware of the price of mass transit. First the politicians set up light rail, or busses out to the nether realms. Then they ditch derelict people by “influencing” the vagrants they don’t want to to continue to “manage.” It is a plan to increase their voting base and broaden their Democrat control.

Mass transit was first invented/installed in Italy and ended up in fascism. It solidified power.

Why aren't you on city council?

Alicia Imel's avatar

Why did none of the candidates I voted for win a seat? When I posted that we residents of district 3 should unite to get Angelita Morillo off the council, the one response I got was that the system rigged so forget about it, which is true if everyone believes it is true.

c Anderson's avatar

That’s why you shouldn’t be on the council. Wake up! It IS rigged. The people like it rigged. Until everyone knows how deeply it is rigged, nothing will be repaired. 🤷‍♀️

Your last sentence is so true. They have no morals and no understanding of the average Portlander. I just hope with the RCV now applying to Multnomah County you don't end up with more DSA's in political power. 😫

Richard Cheverton's avatar

You will--but it'll be tough to top the progressive types now on the board.

I’ve noticed that young female leftists often make a point of applying makeup while they are sharing their wisdom on TikTok. I assumed this was because they need to have both a mirror and camera in front of them to know they exist.

What do concerned citizens of Portland need to do -- to find BETTER candidates?

There have got to be some thirty-something or forty-something year olds who can get voted in and do some good for the majority who don't seem to be represented any more (for a long time now)

Dave Mc Lean's avatar

You mean some "racist, fascist Nazis"? Progressive Portland has no room for that.

Concerned Oregonian's avatar

Those terms no longer have the shock value that they used to. I believe we are now called terrorists or white male supremacists (regardless of our skin color or gender)
