I have a friend who has a close relative who is basically a white supremist intellectual and Holocaust denier (or deconstructionist is more like it). I first met him in 1975 after he returned from Europe where he had been studying. He was arrested for placing a wreath with a Swastika on it at the site where Hitler organized his Beer Hall Pusch on the 50th anniversary of it. At that time the symbol in Germany was illegal. He is extremely well educated and considered such a threat that the Simon Wiesenthal institute keeps a file on him. I'd be curious to know what he would think of how the White Supremist movement has become so integrated. Enrique Tarrio? Nick Fuentes? Reminds me of an old National Lampoon from the 70's about racism where the Ku Klux Klan takes in black members because "they need the dues".

I went into Portland today to wish a good Thanksgiving to an elderly friend. Seems to me Thanksgiving is getting the silent treatment as we inch closer to its abandonment in favor of evil white people atonement day.

Anyway, I saw some new ACABs and other rubbish, the most innovative being "Avenge our Trans Brothers"!

For myself I reflected on once again finding myself in the midst of a gutless, moronic, and contemptible citizenry. Just what evil fucking cowards comprise the citizenry of Multnomah County, the City of Portland, and much of Oregon's population.

I logged back in thinking to leaven or moderate this entry. Cannot do it.

The kid gloves with which these violent BLM/Antifa zealots are handled is a local—and national—disgrace, especially as contrasted with the stern punishments meted out to January 6 rioters of every description and culpability. As always, these intriguing individual slices of life spark further curiosity for me, thanks. Mr. Swales’ nominal backstory as a child and as an adult helps but does not altogether explain his almost maniacal hatred for police. Don’t blame Jesse Lee Johnson?!

Reviewing related material on O-Live, etc., I wonder why Swales has court-appointed counsel, however competent, while his colleague Hacker initially qualified too….then opted for a bench trial while now represented by two retained attorneys from an expensive Portland firm. He also has separate private counsel defending him against Andy Ngo’s civil lawsuit. Who/what paid? Or is it pro bono work out of political solidarity, shared perhaps by selected members of the judiciary?

The outrageous expenditures of criminal defense attorneys are a well-kept secret. They don't have to reveal what they spend and how because it would supposedly violate the attorney-client privilege by revealing "strategy."

Once a case ends in a conviction, then the excuse shifts to protecting the defendant's rights in case there’s an appeal.

It appears that with the defeat of Jo Ann Hardesty, Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt now sees his own future. If he wanted to, instead of crying about how he has to release defendants because there are no public defenders, he could redeem himself by pushing for legislation that would require transparency in criminal defense spending.

Suzanne Bonamici's idea to shift federal money to state public defenders is just more wasting of money. Would it occur to her or Schmidt to demand an audit of where millions have already gone in the past decade?

I would defer to Mr. Marquis’ expertise on appropriate, comparative state-funded expenditures on behalf of an appropriately-vigorous defense, assuming that a relative proximity to prosecution outlay or receptivity to be apt outlay is necessary and appropriate. Nonetheless, would not be the ultimate arbiter of reasonable expense be a judge, or panel thereof? Schmidt either way is a jejune, left-wing arriviste.

Wait ‘til Candace Avalos, Portland’s Slug Queen of Nonprofits, hears about Seattle’s generous sabbaticals for BIPOC EDs.

I would tell her except she has blocked me on Twitter. Some public performers can’t handle catcalls, but they don’t want to leave the stage.

One of the most laughable modern misnomers is "non-profit" for frivolous leftist NGOs. In fairness, it has worked for Joel Osteen and Creflo Dollar as well, though with less (directly) from the taxpayer.

I lived in Seattle in the late '80s, early '90s. Horrible traffic, but Starbucks and Microsoft taking off; Nirvana at the Ballard Firehouse. Portland has analagous glories. What a tremendous loss of positive energy.

Joel Osteen and Creflo Dollar I have heard of and assumed that they were current practioners of American religious fraud, bunco games, and generally looting the gullible religious. Like the Roma they will destroy anyone they can bilk.

That being said, none of the aforementioned have violently attacked American cities and select populations while enjoying state and federal legal protections and often the funding of my government.

Osteen/Dollar have helped hollow out the nation's spiritual core, I suppose. Arguably, their Christian vics were volunteers. These secular religionists do their thang with conscripts.

For a change of pace, I'm reading your "Lost Restaurants of Portland, Oregon." It's a great reminder of what Portland used to be like before it was cool and weird -- back when it was real and quirky.

I'm sorry I never got to be a regular at a place like the Monte Carlo. Fred Stewart's quote says a lot: "(T)he people there were 'Good people.' That meant something to me. I always felt safe there with my friends." (Is he the same Fred Stewart who ran for City Council several years ago? If so, he's the last council candidate I gave a donation to. Unfortunately, Willamette Week did a hit piece on him, and he didn't survive the primary.)

By the way, I couldn't find your book at Powell's. When I asked the clerk if they would be getting more copies in, he didn't know or seem to care. Meanwhile, the store is still promoting Michelle Obama's first memoir, which has been out a few years. She now has a second, which I'm sure will be a hit with or without Powell's promotion.

Fortunately, Annie Bloom’s Books in Multnomah Village not only has "Lost Restaurants of Portland, Oregon," but it's displayed on the front counter.

Thanks so much for reading the restaurant book. I hope you enjoy it. No Powell’s and I don’t like each other. LOL. I tried to write about one of their asshole employees and published it to my Substack page, and they had their attorneys threaten me with a lawsuit, and then they officially banished me from all their dusty health hazard stores. It’s all on my FB page.

When I found out they were still selling all six of my published books including “The Lost Restaurants of Portland, Oregon,” after 86ing me, I demanded that they stop selling ALL six of my books and remove my name and any links to my books from their website. It took the incompetent buffoons about two weeks, but they complied with MY demands.

Word on the street is that they get constant calls from people asking for my book, snd people walk in asking about it, which frankly I find HILARIOUS!

Yes, Fred Stewart has run for office several times. Nigel Jaquiss was the racist journalist who destroyed Fred’s chances in the 2016 city council race with their hit piece on him saying he beat up his daughter, which he did not do. But I wrote a 2016 response article which was published with Josh Fenton of GoLocalPDX called “Journalism of Destruction.”

That article has prevented Nigel Jaquiss from being hired elsewhere as a columnist. I never thought a nobody like me could have such an impact on someone so awful, like the arrogant Nigel, but apparently it has, and frankly it’s a great feeling.

If you Google the article you can read it. It’s fairly good for a creative writer who is not technically a journalist. Thanks again for reading the restaurant book. It’s pretty entertaining. 😊

Guess I'll have to hunt out your book, too. Remember dating a beautiful dreadful woman who was the alchoholic daughter of a Scandinavian heart (?) surgeon. She introduced me to the custom of early morning Bloody Marys at Henry Thiele's. It was big prestige and a toe into high society for we high school boys to bring our dates to Roses.

Hi Larry,

You can get copies at the Barnes & Noble stores, and there should be about 50 at the Barnes & Noble at Clackamas Town Center that I signed. You can also buy it online at Amazon or Barnes & Noble dot com. Powell's don't carry it, per my instructions. Powell's is an overrated bookstore, and a dusty health hazard of an old barn. Used to be a classic car showroom years ago, prior to 1971 and they don't do much to keep the store clean, not to mention the deplorable air quality. The chapter I wrote on Henry Theile's was one of the longest. There are some really amusing stories in that chapter. Took me 3 and 1/2 years to complete and already people are clamoring for me to write the sequel. Honestly, I don't know if I have the stomach to go through another thankless three years of research and time consuming image searching. LOL... I think if you get a copy, you'll enjoy it.

Thank you so much for the news that Michelle Obama has condescended to write a second memoir. I believe Barack himself is only on his third. May America strive to finally be worthy of Michelle’s partial approbation. Bless their BIPOC bromides!
