Phalloplasties have a very high rate of complications, so that females who undergo them suffer tremendously as the complications lead to more invasive surgeries and more money for OHSU and other providers.
Removal of a penis from a male is a penectomy:
That is a much simpler procedure with much less risk of complications.
I’m glad this article exists. I am also concerned about these issues however I have two corrections. First, phalloplasty is not the removal of a phallus but the surgical creation of something meant to mimic a penis. Second, they do not remove clitoris during these procedures.
Sorry--here's what OHSU said, as reprinted by OPB: "Dr. Blair Peters, a professor of urology and plastic surgery at Oregon Health & Science University and the author of the study, counted nerve fibers in human tissue that had been trimmed for phalloplasty, the surgical construction or reconstruction of a penis."
Trimmed???? If it wasn't removed, how did he count the fibers?
Like most other dominant institutions in American life, the mainstream media have been captured by the gender ideology spread by trans rights activists. Consequently the average progressive consumer of information is extremely unlikely to encounter any pieces that challenge the current progressive dogma on all things trans. The media, suffering perhaps from Stockholm syndrome, aren't even going to acknowledge that they've been captured. This is as true in Portland as it is in any part of Blue America.
Fortunately, while OPB and others have been self-censoring, courageous, accomplished, well-informed people in the fields of mental health and journalism have been hard at work. They work steadily and methodically to dispel the myths and expose the dangerous lies and half-truths that trans activists and institutions captured by gender ideology have been spreading in schools, business, higher education, medicine, social media, progressive churches and government for years.
Two recent podcast episodes go a long way towards making up for the information blackout on the trans phenomenon.
The first is titled "A Takedown of Gender Politics by Wesley Yang" on the podcast "Gender: A Wider Lens," hosted by two gender-critical therapists. It is episode 93. Here is an abridged description of that episode from the podcast's web site:
"Wesley Yang, an essayist and public intellectual, has written extensively about 21st-century America and the liminal position of the non-black, non-white person. Coining the term 'successor ideology' in 2019, Wesley has carefully analyzed this particular kind of ideology among left-wing movements that is centered around identity politics."
"Wesley has recently turned his attention towards gender issues and, in this episode, he delivers a blistering analysis of how gender has become a socio-political juggernaut, infiltrating society in every possible way."
The second podcast, "Blocked & Reported," is hosted by two liberals who were canceled by their own tribe for speaking inconvenient truths about the trans world and have since gone on to report on the foibles and absurdities of progressive culture.
Someday, OPB and other media outlets will realize they've been as wrong about trans as they once were about demonic cults in daycare centers. Until then, take advantage of the opportunity to be better informed than the editors and reporters in every media shop in town.
Sure enough, the Doernbecher’s trans health site includes a helpful (coff coff) medical link to PrideNW events, the first one being an all-ages drag show featuring “all-star trans youth.” Per United Nations human rights conventions, “youth” begins at age 15. Yes, the most wholesome age for medical experiments!
Ms. Fitzsimmons suggested vehicles for a apt new morality play. I see this Dr. Peters—Hippocrates personified, dontchaknow, just with pink hair—presiding over a local “Island of Dr. Moreau”. Broken, unfashionably aging grotesques shuffling about, muttering “What is the law? To deny nature. Are we not trans men?”
I am happy the UN says "youth" begins at 15, but in Oregon for purposes of consent to engage in sexual activities or to engage in a binding business contract the age is 18.
The penalties for adults engaging in sexual activity with CHILDREN - appropriately get more severe the younger the child; technically 'consensual sex" with a 16 or 17 year old is only a misdemeanor, and rarely prosecuted unless something else is going on.
But an adult having sex with someone 13-15 is a FELONY and may carry prison time. Yes, there are rare 14-year olds who somehow possess adult maturity, but the vast majority do not. When the child is 12 and under the rapist is going to prison for 8 years.
It is an almost exclusively male fantasy of the wise beyond her years Lolita, ready, willing, and able to navigate adult sexuality.
I have better things to do, but I’m trying to sort this out. What does a cow clitoris have to do with a human female clitoris?
And what is a “transmasculine clitoris” vs. a female clitoris? It appears a female can have a “transmasculine clitoris” if they’re feeling … masculine. I made the mistake of Googling this subject, and now I’ll probably have all kinds of ads coming my way.
Does OPB’s Anna Griffin have a transmasculine clitoris? What about Tina Kotek? This is the kind of subject OPB’s “Think Out Loud” could take a deep dive into.
The mid-20th Century had “Reefer Madness.” We need a morality tale for our times — “Gonad Madness.”
They perfrom the surgeries in daylight. Even an enervated inquiry will get you the information needed to learn how to git 'er done. The media knows about it, the educational people know about it, the law knows about it, most parents know about it.
Yet it goes on. And on. And on. I chose not to live among those people, those voters, those citizens, those leaders and lawmakers. I can pluck a revolting obscenity from the air - sex with infants- and it is perhaps less injurious than these surgeries. Yet these surgeries go on.
Really, there isn't much to say. I suspect more often than not parents are OK with the operations. If parents are complicit or silent what can be done? Sometimes all I can think to say to contemporary activists is thanks ladies, thanks a lot.
Phalloplasty is NOT the removal of a penis. Please correct your essay. Phalloplasty is the reconstruction of a penis on a male or the construction of a faux penis on a female. The money OHSU is making is on what it is doing to females, adolescent and adult. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/phalloplasty-for-gender-affirmation

So noted. Either way, it is a grotesque procedure that is entirely cosmetic--an imitation of a sexual characteristic; obscene when done to a kid.

Great comment...you do your homework!
