I have been a close media observer for decades, the decline and fall of the Oregonian started a long time ago. Back in the aughts, they invited some business types in to the Oregonian to try to get them back into advertising, Craigslist had just started and was quickly putting the classified ad section out of business. But already their news reporting was completely ideologically driven. We finally ended out subscription when they stopped delivering daily. (how long ago was that?) I have not seen a print version of the Oregonian in Portland in years, I have occasionally looked for a copy in Sellwood only to not find one anywhere. Ironically you have a better chance of finding a hard copy in Manzanita. Thank you for being here and giving us some real news!
Perhaps in a future "Letter from the Editor" column Ms. Gunderson might tell us what she thinks her Grandpa Al and Grandma Connie would think of the current lousy state of affairs in Portland. Would Editor Al McCready approve of The Oregonian's descent into woke mediocrity and blind boosterism? Would Mayor Connie McCready approve of an impotent mayor and a city council dominated by socialists? Inquiring minds want to know.
The Oregonian is a joke. So, the new editor has no real employment history, one main job... That won't give her the needed perspective of really struggling to pay the bills. I'm sure she has no knowledge of what it's like to work in motels or hotels and all the crazy things you see there. I don't have much respect for people who have extremely limited work experience. Nothing teaches you about life more than scrubbing out a filthy toilet or picking up used condoms from a motel room floor, while making five dollars an hour so you can buy more milk, bread and eggs for your nine-year-old daughter who needs to eat. LOL..
The constant robo-feed of leftist propaganda as “news” from Palabra and Uncloseted Media is really grating. I hoped that with Bottomly out the O would be more neutral, given they played such a key role in the rise of Candace Avalos and she was all in. But seems that won’t be the case.
Am so encouraged by the success, excitement and freedom of independent media! If it weren't for Substack, my mood would be a whole lot worse than it is today. Keep up the great work!
I grew up in Portland when we got the Oregonian in the morning and the Journal in the late afternoon…After moving into my own home, I had the Oregonian subscription until they decided to stop including the added news section insert that was specific to the area you lived in… mine was east Portland/ county coupled with a Sunday paper that the “ heft” of it was not from news but from the ad inserts. Now the Oregonian has devolved into attempts to lure online reader subscribers by infiltrating the Nextdoor feed with “articles” that soon after clicking and reading an anemic first paragraph soon turns into an ad for subscription sign up in order to continue reading— no thanks. I want to read the good, bad and ugly of topics in this city, county and state I live in. The Oregonian isn’t that vehicle so I’ll just continue reading my various substack writers which is a refreshing option available now thanks to writers like you Richard.
Same here. Just like with Willy Weak. They blocked me and not for any reason other than I didn't agree with their liberal, yet hypocritical politics. Freedom of expression banned. Freedom of speech banned. YAWN. Borrring. Buh bye.

I stopped reading the Oregonian when then stopped allowing comments. Thank you for the article!
We stop subscribing to it when they stopped the daily delivery.
