Plaintiffs will split the recent $8.5 City Council Albina "settlement." Their federal lawsuit, now moot, will never face cross-examination. But questions remain.
These Bureaucrats serve only to drive Portland further into the gutter. Were they really elected or installed? Born and raised in a middle class family in Portland, I bet Portlanders have about had it. Clean the voter rolls, use paper ballots and voter ID and let’s see what happens.
Is there really no recourse for those of us taxpayers who foot the bill for this nonsense? I fear this is just the first example of what politely could be called extortion that can only come about when progressive white guilt is activated by a savvy black politician like Loretta Smith. You've got to hand it to her, hope she gets a commission from the "winners". I'm skeptical any of the men on the City Council will have the stones to push back so I'll be counting on one of the women. Fingers crossed.
Didn't the city attorney recommend they settle rather than it going to court? If the displaced people were fairly compensated at the time, that information would have come out in court and the city would have won the lawsuit. This decision by city "officials" is disturbing on so many levels.
Yes, the City Attorney’s office negotiated — and the plaintiffs agreed to — a $2 million settlement. The council rejected it and offered $8.5 million instead.
The Portland City Council is under no obligation to follow the City Attorney’s advice, but this council seems willing to gladly ignore that advice — even if it’s more costly to Portlanders.
Earlier this year, the council rejected the city attorney’s request to appeal a $1 million verdict awarded to the family of a violent meth addict, who tried to attack a cop. Instead, the city went ahead and gave the family $1 million. The City Attorney's office believed it had a good legal grounds for winning on appeal.
You could argue that in the short term the city saved money in court costs by not appealing. In the long-term, though, not fighting back invites more lawsuits from violent drug addicts and their families (no shortage of those or the violent "mentally ill" in Portland).
But it appears that there is enough evidence - click on "city archive" in the article -- that the plaintiffs were compensated fairly 60 years ago and if so, that would have been presented during a trial meaning the plaintiffs would have lost the lawsuit.
Yes, but the city council went their own way — and unanimously at that. Not one of them objected or raised any of the facts brought to life by Richard Cheverton.
Had the City Attorney's Office pushed for a trial on Albina, it likely would have been rejected by the council just as it was when it wanted to appeal giving $1 million to the family of meth addict Michael Ray Townsend. The council said pay it.
While you are being very logical here, citing the city archive and predicting the plaintiffs would have lost the lawsuit, keep in mind: A progressive jury is a lenient jury.
"...Councilor Loretta Smith. (Who now owns the title of Queen of Race Resentment and Reparations.)"
You must be new around here... Smith is just NOW(!!!) getting "the title of Queen of Race Resentment and Reparations"? I got news for you pal o' mine... she's had that distinction since she's been a "public servant" (read "servant of Loretta Smith")!!!!
The damages should be trebled for any identity oppressed plaintiffs who are otherwise prone to greater suffering than other victims of institutional oppression.
Yowza
Who’s ready for a Xanax? The taxpayer of course.

The vote was unanimous. A major disaster will have to hit Portland before anything changes.

Don't forget she was also a "servant" of U. S. Sen. Ron Wyden, where she undoubtedly learned a few things about finagling other people's money.

😂🤣😂😅
Looking forward to PDX going totally broke within the next year. Elections have consequences.
